The Superhuman Legal Authority (or S.L.A. as it is more commonly known) is a special branch of the law created to handle cases related to superhumans. S.L.A. court proceedings are designed to finish in a matter of days, due to the often demanding nature of superhero work, and as such they do not feature a jury. Lawyers that work for the S.L.A. must undergo several examinations to ensure that they can quickly and effectively prove or disprove a client's guilt. They are also expected to have a sufficient knowledge of superhuman-related matters.

A special squad of baliffs are present at every S.L.A. trial, equipped with tranquilliser guns and stasis cuffs in case a superhuman tries to cause trouble.

History

Due to the bizarre situations superhumans often find themselves in, and the inconvenience of holding a superhero back from doing his duty for months, it quickly became clear that regular court proceedings were not an effective way of holding superhumans on trial. During a case in 1994, what would come to be known as the infamous "Superhero Crackdown" case, a judge declared that the justice system should be abused no further, and that a special branch of the law be formed to cater for them. There were compelling arguments for and against the idea. Less than a year later the S.L.A. was formed, granting the League of Salvation complete amnesty, but holding all other superhumans responsible for their actions.

The creation of the S.L.A. caused a lot of controversy. Originally it only held jurisdiction in Canada and several North American states, but in the aftermath of the Technax Armada's invasion it was spread to encompass all of the United States, Great Britain, and Australia.
